Howie is something of a Phnom Penh late night institution - due to its longevity rather than any standout virtues. The music’s fun and the crowd’s mixed with travellers, expats and locals.

Phnom Penh’s messiest nights end up around this part of town. If you’re lucky, you might head home from Howie and skip Heart of Darkness and Pontoon -  both seconds away on foot. If not, it’s into the abyss.

Howie Bar’s been a good late night compromise for a long time with a fun musical selection from across the decades, a mixed and friendly (most of the time) international crowd and little evidence of the sleaze of most of its neighbours. It’s less overpowering than its neighbours in all senses. It’s even possible to hold a conversation!
