Climate change, bad coastal development practices or a nasty storm? For the past decade or more, Cua Dai beach outside of Hoi An has been one of my favourite places in Vietnam for an ocean swim. Today it's gone. Swept into the sea. I couldn't get precise answers as to why. Popular resorts such as Victoria Hoi An and Hoi An Beach Resort are suddenly beachless. New developments have been inundated. A mini tourism economy that lived on the beach has been wiped out. Work is under way to rescue the beach - but it looks like a huge task. We'll be seeking out more information. In the meantime, if you're looking for a beach close by Hoi An, head further north to An Bang. It too has experienced some erosion but there's still plenty of beach.
Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
