Koh Rong Samloem, an island with big things ahead

The islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem off Sihanoukville on the Cambodian southern coast, have been on the backpacker trail for years now. The introduction of regular fast boats in 2014 promises to bring them into the tourism mainstream - for better and worse. These are exceptionally beautiful islands and for now they only offer simple bungalows. But change is coming and Sihanoukville, known mostly for sleaze and backpacker excess, is likely to cast a long shadow over development.
