The rise and fall of Hanoi's Train Street

By Mark Bowyer / Last updated 12 Oct 2019
Hanoi's Train Street was permanently closed to tourists earlier this month on account of official fears for the safety of tourists. We shot a video at Train Street in 2017 before the Instagram excitement, and went back recently to see how things had changed. Now all of it will be closed off to tourists. While it's hard to argue with the safety risks of this social media phenomenon, it's sad to see these small businesses forced to close.

Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
