The temples of Angkor have excaped the worst excesses of mass tourism - so far

We write a lot about the threats facing our favourite places - environmental and heritage destruction are part and parcel of travel. A week spent at Angkor recently left me thinking that the temples have held up under the weight of a deluge of tourist arrivals better than could have been predicted when I first visited 25 years ago. It sure ain’t perfect. And critiques of Angkor’s environmental and heritage record abound. But many of the things I loved about Angkor 25 years ago can still be experienced today - if you know how.
