Vietnam’s family and street food goes indoors and a little upscale too, at Chi Hoa in Saigon’s downtown area.

While foreigners get ever-more excited about Saigon street food, Vietnamese are becoming more inclined to seek out their cuisine indoors - especially young professionals at lunchtime. And they’re happy to pay a premium for some atmosphere and design too. You’ll see them out in force at Chi Hoa - the latest offering from the group behind many of Saigon’s most successful eateries (think Au Parc, Hoa Tuc, Propaganda, Tuk-Tuk and more).

Chi Hoa serves a wide and tasty selection of Vietnamese cuisine that’s a mix of home cooking and the “com binh dan” or “ordinary people’s food” traditions. You can look through the trays and order something, or check out the extensive menu. They also do Vietnamese breakfast, banh mi and dishes like pho. It’s all served from a small open kitchen on the ground floor. The owners insist that they labour over quality and hygiene.

As you’d expect, Chi Hoa’s more expensive than a streetside plastic stool. And it’s much more comfortable too. It’s set over multiple floors but each room is cosy - not too big.

We’ve eaten here lots of times and it’s good spot that’s especially busy at lunch.

Chi Hoa is also Saigon's most infamous prison (different tones in Vietnamese), so to avoid a rude shock, if you're travelling by taxi. you might want to make sure you show the street address. It's located right downtown in District 1.

Rusty Compass reviews are always independent. We list the stuff we think you should know about. We’ve always paid our way at Chi Hoa and no inducement, financial or otherwise, was received for this listing.

We loved this restaurant, it was busy at lunch but we still had a nice window street and it wasn't too crowded. a casually stylish and friendly atmosphere with good Vietnamese food. Great spring rolls.
