The biggest attractions of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang World Heritage listed National Park, are some of the world's largest and most spectacular caves. Phong Nha may be the best known but the discovery of the spectacular Paradise Cave in 2005 has stolen some of Phong Nha's thunder.

The beautiful karst landscapes of the region and relatively quiet roads also make it a pleasant place for cycling and motorcycling - though getting your hands on bikes - with or without motors - can be a headache.

Unfortunately the town right by the caves, Son Trach, has a wild west feel in terms of tourism. Restaurants, motorcycle hire and bicycle hire are often wildly overpriced making for a less than hospitable place for travellers.

The other hazard to be factored in your plans is that hordes of domestic travellers descend on the caves - especially on weekends and during summer holidays. They can be a major obstacle to a positive experience. Try and schedule your visit to avoid the busiest times.
