The Light House and the Jesus statue are two Vung Tau landmarks that provide more great views across the coast. The views make the lighthouse journey worthwhile (you can get to the top by car / motorbike or a long arduous walk). You probably don't need to climb to the top of Jesus statue where the views are less impressive. There appears to be work going on at the lighthouse and guards refused me access to the building. There were plenty of local tourists enjoying the vista from the tower though. Guards insisted it was closed but the rule seemed to apply only to foreigners. The views from the grounds at the lighthouse base are impressive - but I assume less so than those from the tower.
