Australian visitors to Danang’s My Khe beach will notice that the surf lifesavers wear the same kit as their counterparts all over Australia. An Australian aid project has provided training and presumably uniforms as well - making these some of the sharpest looking surf lifesavers on Vietnam’s long coast. Despite the long coastline, a large number of Vietnamese can't swim. As many as 9 children are thought to drown every day - so this is important work. The locals have held on to some of their own techniques. These basket boats, known as coracles, are the preferred craft for patrols. And while they look unwieldy for negotiating rough surf, it's amazing how deftly these guys navigate. I’m not sure how they'd go pulling someone out of the water though. Bondi Rescue watch out!
