Not far from the centre of Cat Ba town is Cannon Fort - a French era fort that was also used in the defense of Haiphong during the Vietnam War. The fort is interesting enough and the views are impressive too. Information is scant and the staff on the gate were shameless scammers and pretty nasty during our visit - demanding we return our tickets (entrance tickets not parking tickets) to enable resale before returning our bikes. An unpleasant experience of an historical sight.
