Most travellers to Cat Ba will use it as a base for a Halong Bay tour that is focused around Lan Ha Bay. The landscapes are similarly beautiful to the main bay. There are fewer tourists at Cat Ba most of the time (Vietnamese tourists arrive in droves in the summer holiday months of July and August) but boat options are fewer as well and quality tends to be lower.
