Review
The Vietnamese connection to France lives on. More than six decades after the ignominious French departure from Vietnam as colonial rulers, France is home to a large Vietnamese community. It’s also a favoured destination for Vietnamese students.
In the case of Atelier Des Reves, diners in Saigon are the beneficiaries of the exchange.
Dung and Thao, the young owners, met while studying cooking and hospitality in Paris. And they’ve brought their decade of experience in Paris kitchens back to Saigon in the form of Atelier Des Reves, which means “workshop of dreams”.
In addition to the a la carte menu, there are 3 set menus ranging in price from around 350K VND to 750K. We’ve been twice now, opted for the set menus each time and everything has been delicious and beautifully presented.
Servings are modest and I’d prefer more vegetables with my meal. But that’s a common complaint of mine.
House wines by the glass were good and inexpensive and there’s a broad selection of French wines by the bottle starting from 700K VND.
The setting is modern and spare, in a very local part of Saigon. Dining is smoke-free indoors with smokers on the terrace.
As you wander Ky Dong St, you may be tempted to return for some local food on another night. There are lots of little local eateries around.
Atelier Des Reves is a great way to experience a Vietnamese take on French cuisine in a distinctly Vietnamese setting. Recommended.
