Con Dao Island off Vietnam's southern coastline is preparing itself for a tourism onslaught. With gorgeous beaches and a delightful laid back town, it's a perfect escape from the hyperactivity of Vietnam's cities. Con Dao has not always been so enticing however.

The prison established by the French on the island in the late nineteenth century was the most brutal in colonial era Indochina. Many of the leaders of Vietnam's independence movement were imprisoned here and many of its alumni went on to become the most celebrated of Vietnam's communist leaders including Pham Van Dong, Le Duan, Ton Duc Thang and Le Duc Tho. Much of the prison still stands as a chilling reminder of those days.

In this Insights HD video, Mark Bowyer takes us on tour of the island's prison museum and the island itself.
