Location
Anh Khanh’s studio is located in expansive grounds in Gia Lam, a residential area across the Red River. It’s around 15 minutes from downtown Hanoi by taxi. You’ll be mostly using taxis to get to and from downtown.
Review
Anh Khanh is wonderful, eccentric artist. He delights in shock value - and prudish travellers will find some of his artwork and garden decorations a challenge. But if you’re open-minded and looking for a unique Hanoi experience with a host who’ll give you a truly memorable experience, Anh Khanh’s studio homestay may well be the highlight of your travels.
Guests at Anh Khanh’s are accommodated upstairs in the large traditional wooden house that is the centrepiece of Anh Khanh’s studio. It’s huge, it’s filled with Anh Khanh’s artwork and it’s like no other place you’ll have stayed before. There’s a bedroom and living space. Bathroom and shower are downstairs. And it all looks over the vast 2500sqm grounds of Anh Khanh’s property.
This isn’t for everybody and you’ll need a bit of extra confidence and mobility to negotiate the place. It’s for independent-minded travellers looking for something different. But it’s also one of Hanoi’s most interesting accommodations. It makes the most sense for those staying more than a couple of nights - that way you’ll have time to both explore Hanoi and enjoy Anh Khanh’s space.
Anh Khanh also has a tree-house and a dungeon room available on the property. These are only for the most adventurous. They are both highly unconventional and potentially dangerous due to ladder access.
Breakfast is included in the price and there’s a live-in cook who will provide Vietnamese lunches and dinners by prior arrangement and for an additional fee.
Try negotiating the price. $100 seems a tad high for a shared space.
Brief
1500sqm grounds, wifi, breakfast included, no air-con.
