For those with plenty of time, the journey to Thuan An Beach is easy and takes you through some nice villages and countryside. The beach is OK but not as nice as those further south around Hoi An.

Few people allocate enough time in Hue for sun and sea though the beach is OK if the heat gets unbearable. Deck chairs and small seafood stands line the beach if a day in the sun in Hue suddenly takes your fancy.

If you’re planning beach days into your itinerary, you’ll be better off taking them in Hoi An than Hue.

Thuan An is 14 kilometres from Hue and there are some nice villages along the way, including a well marked former residence of Uncle Ho (the second in Hue) in a place called Phu Duong.

In 1883, a French expeditionary force landed on Thuan An beach and with some fairly forceful persuasion consolidated the partition of Vietnam after decades of encroachment and harassment.
