Day trippers descend on Ninh Binh each morning from Hanoi to take boat trips along the gentle streams and wander through the mostly recreated ruins of Hoa Lu. It's a tight day and you're locked in with the mildly interested mass of other daytrippers. Spend a couple of nights here to make the most of this delightful area.
A couple of nights in Ninh Binh will allow you time to enjoy the stunning scenery without the masses. Casual cycling along the quiet lanes and through the timeless karst landscapes is a real travel highlight.
Hoa Lu and Tam Coc are pleasant stops as well - providing you come before or after the day trippers. An early morning or late afternoon ciimb of Hang Mua affords the most dramatic views of the area.
Nearby Phat Diem Cathedral is an excellent half day trip from Ninh Binh and nature lovers may also want to spend a day amidst the lush tropical forest of Cuc Phuong National Park with its Endangered Primate Rescue Centre.
