Club Opera Novel is probably Hanoi's most lavish Vietnamese restaurant - right downtown on Trang Tien St.

Club Opera Novel is another offering from a family behind many of Hanoi and Saigon’s upscale restaurants. The decor and general haughtiness might be a little overdone but this is an impressive creation - good for a dressed up evening of Vietnamese cuisine.

The food presentation is also impressive - the flavours a little less so. Seems to be suffering the common curse in Vietnam of upscale restaurants excessively focused on interiors and presentation at the expense of simple quality food.

The absence of Vietnam's prosperous class as customers is telling. And a degree of prosperity is required to pay the bill. The high pricing perhaps more a reflection of rent and fitout than fine food.

Club Opera Novel fits in well on the increasingly flashy Trang Tien St not far from the Opera House and the Metropole Hotel.

On my most recent visit menu changes included some further big price hikes and the removal of many dishes that would normally be essential to an "authentic" Vietnamese meal. Staff told me the mainly foreign clientele was unfamiliar with these dishes.

Staff are friendly and professional.
