Thuy Ta Ice Cream, right on the banks of Hoan Kiem Lake, is a Hanoi institution. Predating the North's independence from France in 1954, it’s one of the few businesses to have made the transition from colonialism to communism through to today’s state administered market economy. We’re not sure whether it’s endured in name only. These days, longevity is Thuy Ta’s main claim to fame, but the lakeside location helps. While the city now sports plenty of cooler and tastier venues, the locals retain a sentimental attachment to Thuy Ta. Stop by for some ice cream, a beer or a snack with a view across Hanoi’s legendary lake.

Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
