Wild Rice is a good spot for a safe foray into Vietnamese cuisine in a magnificent colonial era villa.

Well into its second decade of operation, when it opened in the early 2000s, Wild Rice was one of the first places in Hanoi to offer visitors a dressed-up Vietnamese culinary experience. Many of its counterparts from those days have closed but Wild Rice is powering on.

On my recent visit, Wild Rice was busy with impeccably presented tourists and business folk preferring its familiar ambience to the more earthy offerings of many of Hanoi’s other Vietnamese restaurants. Popular with tour groups, Wild Rice is a safe bet with good food and a fancy vibe.

The setting is a highlight - in one of the many spectacular mansions in Hanoi's French quarter. None of the staff I spoke to could tell me anything about the history of the building.
